Questions Every Parent Should Ask

At CA-SFEC, we believe families are essential partners in student learning. Whether you’re meeting with a teacher, principal, or school counselor, asking the right questions can help you advocate for your child and stay informed.

Below are some questions to help guide conversations with your school:

For Principals

1. What resources does the school offer to support student learning at home?

Ask about access to devices, internet connectivity, tutoring, mental health services, or language support for multilingual families.

2. How do I stay informed about what my child should be learning this year?

Request information on grade-level expectations, academic standards, and how teachers are supporting student progress.

3. How does the school ensure teachers are supported and effective?

Learn how professional development, mentorship, and parent partnerships contribute to teacher success.

4. What is the best way for families to reach you or your team with concerns?

Understand the school’s communication policy, including who to contact and how—whether by phone, email, or parent portals.

5. What other supports are available at school to help families?

Schools often provide more than just academics. Ask about wellness services, community partnerships, family workshops, or bilingual support.

For Teachers

1. How can I stay updated on how my child is doing in class?

Ask about progress reports, student work, or classroom updates. Also, find out how early warning signs of struggle are communicated.

2. What’s the best way to communicate with you—and how often should we connect?

Whether through email, school apps, or phone calls, setting a communication rhythm ensures everyone stays on the same page.

3. How can we work together to support my child’s learning at home?

Discuss strategies to reinforce classroom lessons at home and ask for tools, tips, or activities aligned with classroom goals.

4. What steps do you take to prevent and address bullying in the classroom?

Ask about classroom norms, behavior policies, and how student concerns are addressed promptly and respectfully.

5. My child is an English Learner. What support is available for them—and for us as a family?

Schools are required to provide tailored academic and language support for English learners. Ask how the teacher integrates this support and how your family will be kept informed and involved.
